Tekakwitha Indian Missions

Tekakwitha Drum CircleIn 1923 Missionary Oblates began their work among Native Americans by opening an orphanage and boarding school for Native American children living in rural areas of South Dakota and Minnesota.  In these isolated regions, many children lived great distances from the nearest school.  The Oblates’ orphanage and boarding school offered meals, shelter, and education to children in need.

Today the Oblates minister to both Native Americans and non-Native Americans living on reservations in South Dakota and Minnesota.  An important part of our work is to help the Indian people retain their traditions and heritage.  For many years Native Americans were taught to abandon their language and their rich customs.  Missionary Oblates incorporate Native American traditions into their liturgies, pastoral care, and religious education.

Missionary Oblates serve in isolated areas where the services of other religious communities may not be available.  Our Drop-In Soup Kitchen, Thrift Shop, and Food Pantry offer hot meals, emergency assistance and low-priced clothing to those in need.

Your generosity will help us continue reaching out to people right here in the United States who are working toward a better future for themselves and their children.  Donate Monthly to Tekakwitha
