Share Hope At The Tekakwitha Indian Missions

On the White Earth Reservation in northern Minnesota, the Easter and planting seasons take place around the same time every year. It is a blessed time of year. Over the next few months, seeds will be planted and nurtured on farms and gardens throughout the area. But ironically, nearly all of the White Earth Reservation is actually a federally recognized “food desert.”

The area is considered a “food desert” because there is a very limited supply of good, healthy food available to our residents. Most grocery shopping takes place at gas stations and small convenience stores where almost all the options are processed foods. To get fresh meats and vegetables at a Wal-Mart or major grocery store, our residents have to drive 50 miles one way to do their grocery shopping.

Our parishes have small but effective food ministries that allow us to distribute food to the neediest families on the reservation. I ask that you prayerfully consider making a donation at this time in support of these ministries to help these families as we wait for our gardens to be harvested later this year.

For your gift of $25 or more, Fr. Greg Gallagher, OMI, will light a Tekakwitha votive candle for you at St. Benedict’s Parish in White Earth, Minnesota.

Thank you for being a co-missionary with us here at the Tekakwitha Indian Missions. Together, let us plant seeds of hope in the lives of our Native American brothers and sisters.
