Dear Oblate Friends,
The poor are heading north, so the Oblates are heading south to meet them.
That was the picture that came to my mind recently when I met with Archbishop Francisco Moreno of Tijuana, Mexico.  I was presenting a plan to the archbishop about our changing involvement in his diocese.  We had decided to return a few of our more established churches to the archdiocese, places that had become a little too comfortable for the Oblates.
It is hard to describe any of our Tijuana mission churches as “too comfortable.”  The buildings and chapels are very simple, some even made with scrap construction material.  But a few of these communities have become significantly more self-sufficient in recent years.  Lay people at these churches are now actively involved in catechizing and faith formation.  This growth prompted us to decide to leave a few of these neighborhoods, to find communities where there is an even greater need.
This means that the Oblates are heading south.  We will be working with the new poor moving into the area; people from southern Mexico and Central America that have no possessions, parents who are desperately looking for work, families escaping from repressive governments.
You are traveling south with the Oblates.  Your prayers and support are vital in allowing us to head to mission territories where few people are willing to go.  Together, we are fulfilling the directions of our Oblate founder, St. Eugene De Mazenod, who instructed us to, “Leave nothing undared for the Kingdom of God.”
Thank you for your generous heart.  I am abundantly grateful for your willingness to walk side-by-side with us on this new journey.

Estimados amigos de los Oblatos,
Los pobres se dirigen al norte, por lo que los Oblatos van hacia el sur, a su encuentro.
Tal fue la imagen que vino a mi mente recientemente al reunirme con el Arzobispo Francisco Moreno de Tijuana, México y presentarle un plan sobre el cambio de nuestra participación en su diócesis. Habíamos decidido devolver a la arquidiócesis algunas de nuestras iglesias mejor establecidas, que se habían vuelto muy confortables para los Oblatos.
Es difícil describir como “muy confortable” a alguna de nuestras iglesias de misión en Tijuana. Los edificios y capillas son muy sencillos, algunas incluso de material de construcción desechado.  En años recientes algunas de estas comunidades se han vuelto más auto-suficientes. Los laicos en ellas participan ahora activamente en la catequesis y formación en la fe. Este crecimiento nos llevó a decidir dejar algunos de estos vecindarios, en busca de lugares con mayor necesidad.
Es por ello que los Oblatos nos dirigimos ahora hacia el sur.  Estaremos trabajando con los pobres que llegan al área; personas del sur de México y América Central carentes de posesiones, padres en desesperada búsqueda de empleo, familias huyendo de gobiernos represivos.
En el viaje de los Oblatos al sur, ustedes van con nosotros.  Sus oraciones y apoyo son vitales y nos permiten ir a territorios de misión donde pocos desean estar. Juntos cumplimos las indicaciones de nuestro fundador Oblato, San Eugenio de Mazenod, de “no dejar de intentar algo por el Reino de Dios”.
Agradezco sinceramente su generosidad y su deseo de caminar a nuestro lado en este nuevo trayecto.
