An Anchor in Alaska

Fr. Tom Killeen O.M.I. Named Citizen of the Year
When Fr. Tom Killeen was in the 8th grade, he was working happily at his uncle’s farm in Independence, Missouri and had a major crush on a girl in his class. But when an Oblate priest came to speak to his class, his life was changed forever. “The Oblate started talking about Eskimos and the Arctic,” said Fr. Tom. “And just like that I forgot the girl and told my mom I was going to be a priest.”
A year after Fr. Tom was ordained, he was assigned to establish a mission in Greenland. After years of work, Fr. Tom found himself driving a small boat up and down the coast of Greenland three to four times each year to minister to eight Catholic families living in those remote areas.
Using a boat to minister during the winter months proved impossible. Instead, Fr. Tom and the other Oblates working in Greenland decided to try reaching the Catholics by airplane. In a matter of several short months in 1966, Fr. Tom earned enough money for a plane, got his license and flew back to Greenland. Unfortunately, Fr. Tom crashed the plane twice and grew frustrated with his efforts.
He decided to take a break from the Greenland mission and joined the Army in 1967. During this time he worked in Vietnam, the Korean Demilitarized Zone and finally Germany. When a fellow Oblate begged him to return to Greenland he agreed. He went back and worked as a social worker for a youth club for the next seven years. When another Oblate replaced him in 1982, Fr. Tom returned to the Army for another 13 years.
Father Tom “retired” at the age of 62. He was sent to Leadville, Colorado to become a parish priest. He loved the nine years he spent there. But when the bishop of the diocese asked a different order of priests to work in that mountainous region, Fr. Tom found himself looking for another cold-weather climate to call home.
And so, at the age of 70, he was sent to Cordova, Alaska. Although he is considered to be in “reduced-active ministry,” he certainly doesn’t slack off. Now in his mid-80s, he still celebrates daily Mass and monitors the activities of the parish.
He takes pride in making himself available to his parishioners and friends…and they take pride in him. Elizabeth Collins, an administrative assistant at Mt. Eccless Elementary School in Cordova, recently nominated Fr. Tom as Cordova Citizen of the Year.
Here is her speech when presenting Fr. Tom with his award: “This year’s citizen of the year is one of the last people in Cordova who would want recognition for the work they do, yet probably one of the most deserving.
“Since the day I met this person I have been lucky enough to build a beautiful relationship with him. Through good times and bad, this person has been an anchor for me. He is, and always has been, a constant source of love in my life, as well as a continuous and devoted supporter. He is the epitome of a kind, caring and understanding individual. He meets people where they are in their own lives, and does so without judgment. He is compassionate and intentional about his interactions with people.
“Regardless of what you believe, or the choices you make in your personal life, this person will be there to listen, to offer advice and to reassure you of the wonderful things that this life has to offer. Personally, I have yet to witness a situation where he has turned anyone away. His willingness to help people and his commitment to our community far exceeds that of anyone I know. Each day I work hard in that hope that I am able to follow in his footsteps and make a difference in people’s lives.
“So, the person who taught me to be awesome instead of good, who made me realize that I don’t have to like everyone but I have to love them, the person who continually supports me and this community, the person who makes everyone else feel like they are the rock star…please join me in recognizing this year’s citizen of the year, Fr. Tom.”

Un Ancla en Alaska

El P. Tom Killeen O.M.I. fue Nombrado Ciudadano del Año
El P. Tom Killeen cursaba el 8° grado y era feliz trabajando en la granja de su tío en Independence, Missouri; además, le emocionaba mucho una niña de su clase. Pero al llegar un sacerdote Oblato a su salón para dar una plática, su vida cambió para siempre.  “El Oblato comenzó a hablar acerca de los esquimales y del Ártico,” dijo el P. Tom.  “Y justo en ese momento olvidé a la niña y le dije a mi mamá que sería sacerdote.”
Un año después de ser ordenado, el P. Tom fue asignado para establecer una misión en Groenlandia. Después de años de trabajo, el P. Tom se encontró navegando en un pequeño bote a lo largo de la costa de Groenlandia tres o cuatro veces al año para atender a las ocho familias católicas en esa remota área.
En los meses de invierno era imposible utilizar el bote, por lo que el P. Tom y los demás Oblatos que trabajaban en Groenlandia decidieron tratar de llegar por avión a los católicos. En unos pocos meses en 1966, el P. Tom reunió suficiente para adquirir un avión, obtuvo su licencia y volvió a Groenlandia.  Desafortunadamente, el P. Tom se accidentó en el avión en dos ocasiones y frustró su esfuerzo.
En 1967 decidió alejarse por un tiempo de la misión en Groenlandia, uniéndose al Ejército. En ese tiempo trabajó en Vietnam, la Zona Desmilitarizada en Corea y finalmente en Alemania. Uno de sus compañeros Oblatos le rogó volver a Groenlandia. Aceptando, fue trabajador social para un club de jóvenes por los siguientes siete años. Al ser reemplazado por otro Oblato en 1982, el P. Tom volvió al Ejército por 13 años más.
A los 62 años el Padre Tom se “retiró” y fue enviado como párroco a Leadville, Colorado.  Los nueve años que estuvo ahí fueron especiales. Cuando el obispo de la diócesis solicitó a otra orden de sacerdotes trabajar en esa región montañosa, el P. Tom se encontró buscando otro hogar en un lugar de clima frío.Y así, a los 70 años de edad, fue enviado a Cordova, Alaska.  Aunque se le considera estar en un “ministerio de poca actividad,” no disminuye el ritmo.  Ahora, a la mitad de sus 80, sigue celebrando Misa a diario y supervisa las actividades de la parroquia. Le enorgullece estar disponible para sus feligreses y amigos… y ellos están orgullosos de él.  Recientemente Elizabeth Collins, Asistente Administrativa en la Escuela Primaria Mt. Eccless en Cordova, nominó al P. Tom como Ciudadano del Año de Cordova.
A continuación, está su discurso al entregar la distinción al P. Tom:
“Este año, el reconocimiento como Ciudadano del Año es para una de las últimas personas que quisieran ser reconocidas por la labor que realizan, aunque probablemente una de las que más lo merecen.
“Desde el día que lo conocí he tenido la suerte de formar una hermosa relación con él. Esta persona ha sido mi ancla en los tiempos buenos y los difíciles. Ha sido y es una fuente constante de amor en mi vida, e igual he recibido su apoyo contínuo y devoto. Es el epítome de una persona bondadosa, cariñosa y comprensiva. Encuentra a las personas donde se encuentran en sus vidas, sin juzgarlos. Es compasivo y bien intencionado en su interrelación con las personas.
“Sin importar en lo que creas o las elecciones hechas en tu vida personal, esta persona siempre está dispuesta a escuchar, a dar consejo y confirmar las maravillosas cosas que la vida tiene para ofrecerte. En lo personal, no he visto que haya rechazado a nadie. Su deseo de ayudar a la gente y su compromiso con nuestra comunidad excede por mucho el de cualquier persona que haya conocido. Todos los días me esfuerzo, esperando poder seguir su ejemplo y lograr una diferencia en la vida de las personas.
“Así que la persona que me enseñó a ser increíble en vez de solo buena, quien hizo notar que no todos tienen que caerme bien, sino que debo solo amarlos, la persona que me apoya continuamente y a esta comunidad, la persona que hace a todos sentirse como una estrella de rock… por favor únanseme a reconocer al Ciudadano del Año de este año, el P. Tom.”
