A Shelter of Grace: Casimira and Ezequiel’s Journey of Faith

In the rugged hills of Tijuana, Mexico, the wind howled through cracked walls and broken windows. Inside their fragile home, 75-year-old Casimira Castillo and her husband, Ezequiel Rodríguez, 79, lived with daily fear and unrelenting hardship.

Ezequiel had lost his leg to diabetes and suffered a debilitating embolism. Their only income—a modest pension of $150 every two months—barely covered food, let alone medicine or home repairs.

They were cold, exhausted, and alone.

Until help arrived.

A Lifeline of Compassion

Through the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, Casimira and Ezequiel discovered more than a clinic.

They found mercy, medical care, and the deep comfort of being seen, heard, and loved.

Casimira, in constant pain from a metal plate in her ankle, continued to care for her husband faithfully. But she could not do it alone. At the Oblate-run clinic, they received the medications and attention they desperately needed—free of charge.

A Roof That Couldn’t Withstand the Rain

While their health needs were met with grace, their home still failed them.

Every rainstorm turned into a crisis. Water streamed through their broken roof, soaking blankets and pooling beneath the bed where Ezequiel lay immobile.

Casimira scrambled to keep him dry—placing buckets, shifting bedding, whispering prayers.

She held on to faith, even as hope began to fade.

An Answered Prayer: A Home Repaired

Then, a miracle.

Thanks to the “Building Hope” roofing program, supported by the Missionary Oblates and Serving Hands International, Casimira and Ezequiel’s home was chosen for repair.

The workers didn’t just bring tools—they brought dignity, comfort, and the promise of safety. As the roof was restored, Ezequiel wept—not in pain, but in gratitude.

That night, for the first time in years, they slept warm and dry.

“It wasn’t just a roof,” Casimira said. “It was a promise that we’re not alone.”
