A Global Family United in Faith

Every year, I am deeply moved by the heartfelt emails I receive from Oblates around the world. These messages, full of gratitude, remind me of the immense power of prayer and the beautiful bond that connects us across borders. This Christmas, I invite you to join our global Oblate family and experience the profound blessings of faith and love that unite us all.

  • Brother Richard Coté, a Brother in the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, has experienced firsthand the deep connections formed through faith across cultures. Throughout his journey, he has observed how different communities uniquely portray the Nativity, each reflecting the beauty of God’s love in ways that are both familiar and sacred to their traditions.

“We want to respect cultures. We live close to the people, so we foster Nativities here to represent various cultures.”Brother Richard Coté

Celebrate the Diversity of Our Global Nativity Traditions

At the St. Joseph the Worker Shrine in Lowell, Massachusetts, you can experience over 70 nativity scenes representing Oblate parishes and missions in 70 countries. This beautiful exhibition, called “Come to the Stables,” showcases the global traditions of the Christmas story.

  • In Tahiti: The Holy Family shelters under a palm tree, surrounded by fragrant white flowers in place of snow.
  • In the Inuits’ portrayal: Christ is born in an igloo, blending local culture with the sacred story.
  • In the Lakota Sioux tradition: Christ is born in a tipi, honoring the cultural heritage of the land.

These culturally rich nativity scenes remind us of the universal truth that Christ’s birth brings light to all people, regardless of location or background.
