Dear Friend,
When I was reading through this issue of Oblate World, I couldn’t help but think of the saying – It’s not where you start, it’s where you finish.
So many Oblates come from humble beginnings – working as a hospital janitor, growing up in an impoverished African village or ministering as a young Oblate on a remote island in the Pacific. But through hard work and strong faith, they go on to create important ministries that impact the lives of many people every day.
I grew up on a family farm in Iowa. Never did I imagine that one day I would be the Provincial of a congregation of priest and brothers. As Provincial, I was given the honor to receive one of the first blessings from our newest Oblate priest, Fr. Steven Montez, OMI. His ordination reminded me that our congregation will be in good hands for generations to come.
The founder of the Missionary Oblates, St. Eugene De Mazenod, beautifully described the starting and end points of an Oblate ministry this way: “We must strive first of all to lead people to act like human beings, and then like Christians, and finally, we must help them to become saints.”
Every day Oblates are treating people like humans, providing them with food, shelter and medical care regardless of their faith. Every day
Oblates are treating people like Christians, as we introduce the faith in places like Cuba and Turkmenistan. And every day we are helping people to become saints, as we see people give their lives in service to God and each other.
Your prayers and support may feel like humble gifts to the Missionary Oblates. But they are not. You are a vital part of our family as we treat people like humans, Christians and saints.
No matter where we started, let us continue to work together to create a glorious finish.

Estimado Amigo:
Mientras leía este número de Oblate World, no pude evitar pensar en el dicho “no se trata de dónde comiences, sino dónde termines”.
Muchos Oblatos provienen de humildes comienzos: de trabajar como conserje en un hospital, crecer en una aldea pobre en África o trabajar siendo un joven Oblato en una isla remota en el Pacífico, pero a través de trabajar con ahínco y una fe sólida, pueden crear ministerios de importancia que repercuten a diario en las vidas de tanta gente.
Crecí en una granja familiar en Iowa y nunca imaginé que algún día sería el Provincial en una congregación de sacerdotes y hermanos. Como Provincial, tuve el honor de recibir una de las primeras bendiciones de nuestro sacerdote Oblato más reciente, el P. Steven Montez, OMI. y su ordenación me hizo recordar que nuestra congregación estará en buenas manos en las próximas generaciones.
San Eugenio de Mazenod, Fundador de los Misioneros Oblatos, describió bellamente de esta forma, el comienzo y fin del ministerio Oblato: “debemos llevar a los hombres a sentimientos humanos, luego cristianos y ayudarles finalmente a hacerse santos”.
Cada día los Oblatos tratan a las personas como humanos, proporcionándoles alimentos, refugio y atención médica, sin importar su fe. Todos los días los Oblatos tratan a las personas como cristianos, al introducir la fe en lugares como Cuba y Turkmenistán, y a diario ayudamos a la gente a convertirse en santos, al ver a la gente entregar sus vidas al servicio de Dios y del prójimo.
Puede que considere sus oraciones y apoyo como humildes presentes para los Misioneros Oblatos, pero no lo son, pues usted es una parte vital de nuestra familia al tratar a la gente como humanos, cristianos y santos.
Sin importar donde hayamos comenzado, continuemos trabajando juntos para lograr un final glorioso.
