Horseback to Hatchback Oblates Minister in Rural Texas

One hundred years ago, Missionary Oblates rode horseback to bring the Good News to isolated parts of Texas. Today, the mode of transportation may be different, but the goal remains the same — to bring the Catholic faith to places where it is in short supply.

“Life is good in Sarita, Texas (population 238),” said Fr. Andy Sensenig, O.M.I. “Life is just better when you take the time to pray and that is what we are doing here in this small town.”

Father Andy is Pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Sarita. He arrived there in August 2019 while also ministering at the nearby Lebh Shomea House of Prayer, a contemplative prayer ministry run by the Oblates.

Father Andy said the lessons he learned at Lebh Shomea reminded him of the importance of allowing time for prayer at his new parish. He continued the practice of having a Mass each day of the week and added a daily Holy Hour to allow parishioners to spend some quiet time with the Lord.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Fr. Andy felt it was necessary to keep some physical connection with his parishioners. So, he enlisted the help of volunteers to hand out copies of the New Testament to parishioners and others in the area who found it too risky to come to church. The volunteers took copies of the New Testament in English and Spanish out to relatives, friends and neighbors as “personal evangelizers,” and as a reminder that the parish was still there to care for their spiritual needs.

In July Oblate Frs. David Ullrich, Fr. Roger Bergkamp and Jim Taggart were assigned to the area to allow the Oblates to expand their ministries beyond the parish in Sarita. The Oblates are now also responsible for Our Lady of Consolation Parish in Vattmann and its two mission churches — Sacred Heart in Ricardo and Our Lady of Guadalupe in Riviera.

The history of Our Lady of Consolation Parish goes back more than 100 years. The original church was destroyed in a hurricane in 1916. The current church was built in 1919 with bricks made by parishioners using sand, mud and clay. A school and convent at the parish have since closed but a large community hall is still used by parishioners for various activities and events.

While many small parishes have been closed or consolidated in recent years, the Oblates are keeping the faith alive in one isolated part of Texas. They are following a path laid out by missionaries on horseback as they preserve a unique Oblate community that has prided itself on warm hospitality, welcoming spirit and spiritual guidance for more than 100 years.

Oblates Also Add New Parish in Massachusetts

At the request of Cardinal Patrick O’Malley of the Archdiocese of Boston, the Missionary Oblates have accepted the responsibility of St. Mary Parish in Georgetown, Massachusetts. The parish also includes a mission by the same name in nearby Rowley, Massachusetts.

Father Mike O’Hara, O.M.I. is serving as Pastor of the parish and is assisted by Fr. Harry Winters, O.M.I. The parish is located about 30 minutes from St. Joseph the Worker Shrine in Lowell, where the Oblates have ministered since 1867.

St. Mary Parish has been serving the Catholic community in Georgetown for more than 150 years. During that time the parish has been served by diocesan priests until Fr. Mike and Fr. Harry arrived last July.

Hace cien años los Misioneros Oblatos iban a caballo llevando las Buenas Nuevas a las zonas aisladas de Texas. Aunque hoy en día la forma de transportarse es diferente, la meta no ha cambiado: llevar la fe católica a lugares donde no abunda.

“La vida en Sarita, Texas es buena (población: 238)”, dijo el P. Andy Sensenig, O.M.I. “La vida es mejor cuando haces tiempo para la oración y eso es lo que hacemos en esta pequeña ciudad”.

El Padre Andy es Pastor en la Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en Sarita, adonde llegó en agosto de 2019, trabajando también en la cercana Casa de Oración Lebh Shomea, ministerio de oración contemplativa bajo la dirección de los Oblatos.

El Padre Andy comenta que las lecciones aprendidas en Lebh Shomea le recuerdan la importancia de darse tiempo para la oración en su nueva parroquia. Continúa celebrando la Misa diaria toda la semana y añadió una Hora Santa para permitir a los feligreses pasar algún tiempo en silencio con el Señor.

Durante la pandemia de Covid-19, el Pr. Andy consideró necesario mantener una conexión física con sus feligreses, por lo que pidió la ayuda de voluntarios para llevar el Nuevo Testamento en el área en que las personas sentían que ir a la iglesia era muy riesgoso. Los voluntarios llevaron copias del Nuevo Testamento en inglés y español a familiares, amigos y vecinos como “evangelizadores personales” y como un recordatorio de que la parroquia seguía atendiendo sus necesidades espirituales.

En julio, los Padres David Ullrich, Roger Bergkamp y Jim Taggart fueron asignados al área para permitir a los Oblatos expandir su ministerio más allá de la Parroquia en Sarita.

Ahora los Oblatos también están a cargo de la Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Consuelo en Vattmann y sus dos iglesias de misión: el Sagrado Corazón en Ricardo y Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en Riviera.

La historia de la Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Consuelo data de más de 100 años. La iglesia original fue destruida por un huracán en 1916 y la actual se construyó en 1919 con ladrillos hechos por los feligreses utilizando arena, barro y arcilla. La escuela y el convento en la parroquia cerraron desde entonces, pero los feligreses siguen utilizando el gran salón comunitario para diferentes actividades y eventos.

Mientras muchas pequeñas parroquias han sido cerradas o consolidadas en años recientes, los Oblatos mantienen viva la fe en una parte aislada de Texas, siguiendo los pasos de los misioneros a caballo, para conservar una comunidad única para ellos que por más de 100 años se ha preciado de ofrecer una cálida hospitalidad, espíritu de bienvenida y guía espiritual.

Los Oblatos Añaden una Nueva Parroquia en Massachusetts

A solicitud del Cardenal Patrick O’Malley de la Arquidiócesis de Boston, los Misioneros Oblatos han aceptado la responsabilidad de la Parroquia Santa María en Georgetown, Massachusetts. La parroquia incluye además una misión con el mismo nombre, en la cercana Rowley, Massachusetts.

El Padre Mike O’Hara, O.M.I. es el Pastor de la parroquia, asistido por el P. Harry Winters, O.M.I. La parroquia se encuentra a casi 30 minutos del Santuario San José Labrador en Lowell, donde los Oblatos han trabajado desde 1867.

La Parroquia Santa María ha atendido a la comunidad católica en Georgetown por más de 150 años a través de sacerdotes diocesanos, hasta la llegada del P. Mike y el P. Harry este mes de julio.
