As we approach Father’s Day and the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus—both celebrating the love between Father and Son—I’m reminded of a story my brother Oblate Fr. Tony Rigoli, OMI, from New Orleans shared with me.

About five years ago, Fr. Tony, encountered Noble Thomas, Jr. living in an abandoned car near Our Lady of Guadalupe church. The church’s location on the fringe of the French Quarter sees many who often go unseen—addicts and others who have lost hope.

When Noble was a boy, his father had killed his mother in front of him and was sentenced to life without parole. Noble floundered, becoming homeless and spending time in prison himself.

Noble confessed his sins, asking for mercy and forgiveness. Father Tony began bringing Noble food and building trust.

That mercy and love started a new chapter in Noble’s story. He visited his father in prison and forgave him. He got a full-time job and a place to live. Noble also regularly speaks to the students in Fr. Tony’s confirmation classes.

“The truth is, God loves both Nobles, father and son,” Fr. Tony said. “They are different people today because they experienced God’s mercy and the freedom He offers through forgiveness.”
