A Testament to Faith and Dedication: Brother Stancovich Simukonda
Brother Stancovich Simukonda’s journey with the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate is a compelling story of faith, dedication, and perseverance. Born in Zambia, Brother Stancovich grew up in a large Catholic family with seven siblings. His early life was immersed in faith, attending church regularly with his mother and participating actively as an altar server in a Jesuit parish.
A JOURNEY OF FAITH AND DISCOVERY
Brother Stancovich’s faith deepened when he moved to live with his sister in a different town during his eighth grade. The change required him to adapt to a new language and environment, which he found challenging. Despite these difficulties, he sought solace in church activities and eventually joined the altar servers. His participation in the Outreach Youth Outreach (OYO) program in Zambia further solidified his desire to join the Oblates. Inspired by the missionaries and scholastics he met; he felt a calling to serve God more profoundly. In 2014, after years of communication and discernment, he joined the pre-novitiate outside of Lusaka, Zambia.
ADAPTING TO RELIGIOUS LIFE
Adjusting to the pre-novitiate life was initially challenging for Bro. Stancovich. Getting used to the rules and communal lifestyle was a significant shift from his previous independence. However, the experience taught him patience, the importance of listening, and the value of diverse perspectives. Over time, he bonded with his peers, growing to love and support one another. “The pre-novitiate was one of the best moments for me because I was coming from the outside world, and the formators were really patient with us,” he shared. The hospitality and closeness of the Oblates left a lasting impression on him.
MISSIONARY WORK AND FORMATION
Brother Stancovich’s journey took him to South Africa for his novitiate, where he took his first vows after completing the year-long program. The next stage of formation required him to move to San Antonio, Texas. The move was initially challenging, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, but he embraced it with gratitude, viewing it as an opportunity for growth and new experiences.
In San Antonio, Bro. Stancovich engages in various pastoral ministries, including working with St. Vincent de Paul Bistro to feed the poor and homeless, teaching religious education, and participating in an internship in California this current year. All of these formative experiences enrich his pastoral skills and prepare him for future ministries.
Brother Stancovich’s commitment to his pastoral duties is evident in the way he approaches each task with compassion and dedication. “Working with the poor and homeless at St. Vincent de Paul Bistro has been a humbling experience,” he shared.
“It has taught me the value of service and the importance of seeing Christ in everyone we meet.” His role in teaching religious education has also been a source of joy and fulfillment. “Teaching the young minds about faith and guiding them in their spiritual journey is something I cherish deeply,” he added. He also mentioned that his internship in California has exposed him to diverse pastoral settings, further enriching his formation.
PERSONAL REFLECTIONS ON FAITH AND FORMATION
Reflecting on his journey, Bro. Stancovich expressed gratitude for the diverse experiences and lessons learned. “The Oblate culture really binds us, giving us an identity in the community,” he explained. He highlighted the importance of cultural integration within the Oblate community, noting that while there are cultural differences, common elements such as community, prayer, and shared meals help bridge the gap. He shared a touching story about his family: “My mother is very supportive. Even now, she asks me to call her when I get home safely. It’s part of our culture, and it shows how much she cares.” This support has been vital for Brother Stancovich, especially when facing challenges. “Having the support of my family has been crucial,” he added. “It reminds me of the importance of community and connection.”
Brother Stancovich also emphasized the role of his fellow Oblates in his formation. “The sense of brotherhood among the Oblates is something truly special,” he noted. “We support each other, learn from each other, and grow together in our faith journey.”
FUTURE ASPIRATIONS
Looking ahead, Bro. Stancovich aspires to work in formation, helping other young men who join the Oblates. He credits the formators who guided him through his journey, teaching him patience and providing support. “I’ve seen my growth from the time I joined, and I want to help others in the same way,” he said. He also hopes to engage in parish ministry but remains open to where the congregation needs him most.
Brother Stancovich’s passion for formation is driven by his desire to give back to the community that has shaped him. “The Oblate community has given me so much, and I want to contribute to its growth by helping others on their spiritual journey,” he said. “It’s about nurturing vocations and helping others find their path.” He also envisions a future where he can use his pastoral experience to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those he serves. “Whether it’s in a parish or any other ministry, I want to bring hope and healing to those in need,” he added.
