Deepen Your Lenten Journey
Embrace True Transformation
Attending vs. Participating – What’s the Difference?
Lent is a time for deep spiritual renewal, but there’s a stark contrast between simply attending and actively participating. Understanding this difference can transform your spiritual journey.
Attending Lent:
- Going to Mass on Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday without spiritual preparation.
- Giving up something out of obligation rather than a desire for growth.
- Watching others engage in Lenten practices but not taking personal action.
Participating in Lent:
- Engaging in personal prayer, repentance, and Scripture reflection.
- Offering sacrifices that bring you closer to God, not just avoiding something for 40 days.
- Actively seeking spiritual renewal through confession, acts of charity, and deeper faith practices.
Matthew 6:16-18 – “When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites… But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret.” Jesus calls us to an interior transformation, not just an external show of faith.
To truly grasp the significance of this call to transformation, we need to understand why it matters in our spiritual lives.
Why Does It Matter?
Lent is a sacred invitation to transform our lives from within. It is not about merely going through the motions but about allowing God to change us profoundly.
- Opening Our Hearts: When we participate in Lent, we open our hearts to grace, renewal, and a deeper connection to Christ’s Passion.
- Embracing Christ’s Journey: By actively engaging in Lent, we enter into Christ’s suffering and resurrection with hearts ready to receive His boundless love.
Joel 2:12 – “Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.” God calls us to return with our hearts, not just our presence.
Reflecting on our Lenten journey allows us to assess our personal commitment and spiritual growth.
Reflection Questions
- Am I just attending Lent, or am I truly participating in it?
- What sacrifice or practice can I commit to that will bring me closer to Christ?
- How can I make my Lenten journey more meaningful through prayer, fasting, or almsgiving?
By considering these questions, we can deepen our engagement and connection to the spirit of Lent.
