He Gave Everything for Christ-What Will You Give?
“I must go forward calmly, even if there is no light to guide me.” — Blessed Józef Cebula, OMI
Blessed Józef Cebula, OMI was a man of unwavering faith and profound courage. Born in 1902 in Poland, he entered the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate and dedicated his life to serving Christ, guiding souls, and proclaiming the Gospel. But his devotion placed him directly in harm’s way when Nazi forces took control of Poland.
When the occupation began, the Nazis demanded that priests abandon their ministry, close their churches, and cease their religious duties. Józef Cebula refused. He continued his priestly work in secret—teaching, preaching, and celebrating Mass—all despite the growing threat against him.
For this defiance, the Nazis made him a target. He was hunted down, arrested, and sent to Mauthausen concentration camp. There, he endured unspeakable suffering. Witnesses recall how he was mocked, humiliated, and forced to run while carrying heavy loads, beaten each time he collapsed.
But through it all, he never wavered. He held firm to his faith, refusing to let fear break him.
Ultimately, the Nazis executed him on May 9, 1941. He was killed for his priesthood, for his unyielding love of Christ, for the hope he refused to surrender.
His legacy did not die that day—it lives on in the Missionary Oblates who serve in places of persecution and hardship, carrying forward the same fearless devotion that Blessed Józef Cebula, OMI embodied.
Will You Carry His Legacy Forward?
Today, the Missionary Oblates walk the same path of unwavering faith. They serve in places of extreme poverty, persecution, and hardship. They go where others will not—to bring hope to the forgotten, healing to the sick, and the Gospel to those in need.
One such place is Zambia, where Missionary Oblates have ministered since 1984.
There, missionaries travel miles to bring the sacraments to rural villages. They offer food to the hungry, medical care to the sick, and education to children left behind by poverty. They speak the name of Jesus where despair has taken hold.
