A cool breeze sweeps across Lusaka city while an Ordination Mass begins at St. Dominic’s Major Seminary. Over 20 candidates are ordained to the order of Deaconate as transitional deacons. This ordinarily occurs one year before being ordained to priesthood.

Among the 20 candidates is a Missionary Oblate of Mary Immaculate: Bro. Macario Mumba, OMI. But before we go further, let’s go to the evening before.

Before any ordination event, candidates formally meet the ordaining Bishop and attend evening vespers. Here, all candidates make an individual Profession of Faith and an Oath of Fidelity to the Catholic Church. Bro. Macario came before the presider, making his profession and oath, as required by Rite of Ordination. All was received by His Excellency, Archbishop Gian Luca Perici, Papal Nuncio to Zambia.

The following day began with a blend of reverence and excitement. Clergy and family from the West, the Copperbelt (Eastern Zambia) and Mansa (Northern Zambia) made the trip to witness their child and brother be ordained as Deacon. Many Oblate Associates from Oblate parishes in Mazabuka and Magoye made the celebration. After the ordination Mass, Oblate clergy and Associates made their way to the Oblate House for a private reception in celebration of now, Deacon Marcario.

On Sunday, Deacon Macario celebrated his first mass as deacon at the Oblate parish, Mary Immaculate Parish in Lusaka. Deacon Macario is now assigned to Our Lady of Assumption Parish in Mazabuka in the Diocese of Monze just south of Lusaka. Congratulations Deacon Marcario! Serve the Lord well in your diaconate ministry and presence.
