A Journey of Faith: From Elementary Teacher to Oblate Priest

Born in 1977 in Houston, Texas, Fr. Juan Gaspar, OMI is the eldest of seven sons of Mexican immigrants, Maria and the late Benjamin Gaspar. Growing up in a humble household, Fr. Juan’s life exemplifies the power of faith and dedication.

From an early age, Fr. Juan demonstrated a strong sense of responsibility and compassion. His calling to serve others led him to become an elementary school teacher in Houston, where he earned a BA degree from the University of St. Thomas. In the classroom, he wasn’t just teaching subjects—he was instilling values and making a significant impact on his students’ lives.

However, Fr. Juan answered a deeper calling from God. After completing his novitiate in Godfrey, Illinois, he pronounced his first vows as a Missionary Oblate of Mary Immaculate in 2008 and started his theological studies while residing at George Sexton House of Studies community in San Antonio, Texas. His compassionate approach and unwavering faith touched the hearts of many during his pastoral internship at St. Jude Shrine in New Orleans, Louisiana.

After being ordained to the priesthood in May 2013, Fr. Juan received his First Obedience to the United States Province from the Superior General and was assigned to Santa Rosa Parish in San Fernando, California. After three years, he moved to the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, Illinois where he connected with the Shrine Hispanic community. Soon there after, the Oblate leadership assigned him to formation where he provides essential guidance to our men in formation for the Oblate way of life.

Father Juan’s story highlights the dedication and perseverance of the Missionary Oblates in preparation others to serve the most vulnerable and spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. The Missionary Oblates work tirelessly in challenging conditions, offering pastoral care, evangelization, and social outreach to ensure that faith reaches even the most remote places.
