Ordained for Mission: Father Mateusz Garstecki, OMI Begins His Priestly Ministry

On Saturday, September 13, 2025 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in San Antonio, family, friends, and fellow Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate gathered to witness the priestly ordination of Brother Mateusz Garstecki, OMI. Presided by Bishop Michael D. Pfeifer, OMI, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of San Angelo, TX, the liturgy marked the culmination of years of formation, study, and pastoral service for the Missionary Oblates and Father Mateusz.

Born in Chicago and raised in a Polish-American Catholic family, Father Mateusz’s vocation was shaped by tradition, prayer, and the quiet encouragement of those who walked with him. His journey led through ministry in Tijuana, theological studies in San Antonio, and formation in Rome, where he professed perpetual vows in 2024 and received the Oblate Cross of the late Fr. Alex Roque, OMI.
One of the most moving moments of the ordination day came when Father Mateusz turned to his mother and offered her his first priestly blessing—a gesture of deep gratitude and grace that spoke to the quiet sacrifices behind every vocation. In that exchange was a lifetime of prayer, love, and unwavering support.

The following day, Sunday, September 14, he celebrated his First Mass at the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in San Antonio. Surrounded by loved ones and the faithful community that had supported his journey, he offered the Eucharist with humility and joy.

Now beginning his ministry, Father Mateusz carries with him the prayers of many and the hope of a Church that believes in the power of presence. His story is not only his own—it belongs to every person who prayed, gave, and walked beside him. It is a reminder that vocations are born in community, nurtured by love, and sustained by grace.
